Celebrate St Lucia Day on December 13 (Tuesday)
Want to see a Swedish celebration with holiday songs, and attend a procession in honor of St. Lucia? December 13 is a church feast day for St Lucia. She is a Christian, Sicilian martyr who is held in high regard as a saint by Roman Catholics, Anglicans, Lutherans and Orthodox Christians. St. Lucia is a patron saint of those who are blind or have vision difficulties. This saint represents light in a time of darkness. Hence, reverence for St. Lucia from Scandinavian countries is exemplified by young girls who dress as this saint in honor of the feast, which is Swedish in origin. Additionally, the Swedish tradition calls for the oldest daughter of the household to serve her parents coffee and Lucia buns, while singing the Lucia song. She wears a wreath on her head with candles (or lights) and often leads a singing procession of other girls who carry a single candle. Head out to the Swedish American Museum in Andersonville.
Congratulations to Abigail Ro Ogrentz, the new Sankta Lucia representative who was chosen from a drawing during the 11:30 a.m. celebration at Daley Plaza! She will lead and give light in darkness at the parade procession at 4:45 p.m. from the Swedish American Museum, (5211 North Clark) and return to this starting point for a program that begins at 5p.m. The day’s festivities will conclude with a Sankta Lucia Service and additional musical performances followed by coffee and baked goods at Ebenezer Lutheran Church at 7p.m.
